Washtenaw Community College Emeritus Program

SASC WCC Fitness Class Policy

SASC hosts Line Dance, Strength Conditioning, Tai Chi and Yoga classes through the Washtenaw Community College (WCC) Emeritus Program. The Emeritus Program is funded by a County millage and is a supporting benefit to the community. The instructors are WCC independent contractors.

These classes are in high demand and we want to be fair and allow as many people to participate as possible. We also aim to facilitate a smooth registration process, provide a positive experience, and to make the process equitable for new members, those newly 65, or those just learning about WCC classes. The lottery process will continue to be used, please see our policies below.

  • Policy

    • Must be 65 or older and live in Washtenaw County.

    • One free class per person, per session.

      • If a class has openings remaining a week prior to the start date, then those already enrolled may register for an additional class.

    • Sign-ups for the WCC Winter session will begin the week of November 11, 2019.

    • Sign-up sheets will be available before and after current WCC classes and outside of class times in the office, or you may call by phone.

    • If more than 30 people sign up for a class by December 13, 2019, a lottery will be held.

  • Lottery

    • On December 13, SASC staff will hold the lottery and use the website random.org to determine the 30 participants for each class.

    • In the case of spouses signing up for the same class, please talk to an office staff person for options if you need to take the class together.

    • Those who do not make it into the class will be placed on a wait list.

    • A week before classes begin, participants will receive a reminder call.

      • If a participant drops the class during this time, individuals from the waitlist will be contacted, in order, up to two weeks after the class begins.

  • Tai Chi

    • WCC Tai Chi alternates between Tai Chi Beginning and Tai Chi Continuing.

    • Tai Chi Beginning will be held in the Winter 2020 term.

    • If you are currently in Tai Chi Beginning, please talk to Diane to confirm you are appropriate to move up to Continuing Tai Chi before signing up for the session.

Additional yoga and fitness classes are offered at SASC for very reasonable rates. Please see our newsletter for more details and other offerings.
